Desiderio omoerotico e fotogenia delle immagini divistiche nel cinema di Jean Epstein

1921: Jean Epstein dissemina le pagine del suo dirompente Bonjour cinéma di nomi e volti di attrici e attori: Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Charles Ray, Sessue Hayakawa. Dal canto suo, Louis Delluc popola di volti e corpi maschili le pagine che dedica alle visioni sul grande schermo, sedotto dalle performance brillanti e «naturali» degli attori delle pellicole hollywoodiane. Mi propongo qui di tracciare un itinerario dentro tali riflessioni, per mettere a fuoco la natura corporea dell’idea di fotogenia, dove appare centrale il motivo della dissoluzione di un’identità di genere stabile.

“Amour de Sessue”. Homoerotic Desire and Photogénie of the Images of the Stars in Jean Epstein’s Films

The pages of Jean Epstein’s explosive 1921 book, Bonjour cinéma, are sprinkled with a number of names and faces of actresses and actors: Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Charles Ray, Sessue Hayakawa. Louis Delluc, for his part, fills the pages he dedicates to visions on the silver screen with masculine faces and bodies, seduced by the brilliant «natural» performances of Hollywood actors. In this contribution I aim to trace an itinerary inside these reflections, so as to bring into focus the corporeal nature of the idea of photogénie, centering on the idea of the dissolution of a stable gender identity.
