Vautrin è un film prodotto dalla Lombardo Film nel 1919 e diretto dal regista francese Alexandre Desvarennes. Il soggetto del film è tratto dalla pièce teatrale omonima di Edmond Giraud che riadattò per la scena alcune vicende del personaggio di Vautrin, galeotto gentiluomo creato da Honoré de Balzac per i romanzi de La Comédie Humaine. L’interprete scelto per il ruolo principale fu una grande personalità teatrale dell’epoca, il siciliano Giovanni Grasso (1873-1930). L’articolo analizza il percorso transmediale del personaggio, dal racconto all’interpretazione attoriale di Grasso, mettendo in evidenza le tematiche relative alla mascolinità, all’esotismo e alla costruzione divistica dell’epoca.

Giovanni Grasso in “Vautrin”. Masculinity, Transmediality and Exoticism
Vautrin is a silent movie directed by French director Alexandre Desvarennes, produced by Lombardo Film in 1919. It is based on the homonymous theatrical piece by Edmond Giraud, who adapted for the stage a few episodes concerning the character Vautrin, the gentleman convict from Honoré de Balzac’s novel La Comédie Humaine. The main role was given to one the most influential theatrical figures of the time, Sicilian actor Giovanni Grasso (1873-1930). The article analyses the transmedia evolution of this character, from the novel to Grasso’s scenic interpretation, highlighting certain themes related to masculinity, exoticism and the construction of stardom in that era.
